‘Petition calls on Prescott to step in’

A delegation of residents from one of Cornwall’s most upmarket areas yesterday presented a 900 signature petition to the Government Office South West and demanded a public inquiry.

The signatures were collected at Carlyon Bay and Charlestown, near St Austell, where Johnny Sandelson is proposing to develop a £110 Million beach resort with 511 buy-to-let apartments.

Many living along the roads leading to his Cornwall Coliseum and Crinnis site fear their area could not cope with a development which would double their population.

Their petition presented to the GOSW offices at Plymouth yesterday called on Deputy Prime Minister John Prescott to order an inquiry and veto the proposals.

Rejecting local accusations that they are ‘Nimbys’, the objectors claim St Austell’s congested road network will not be able to cope.

Businessman Peter Browning, of Carlyon Bay, said; “We all want something done about the Cornwall Coliseum site.

“What we are concerned about is the overwhelming scale of this proposed development and the implications for the environment, traffic and community services.

“It is so big that we feel terrified about the outcome.”
